La struttura compositiva di questa pala, proveniente nella chiesa della Santissima Annunziata di Cento, fa perno sull’azione di Sant’Alberto che riceve lo scapolare dalla Madonna del Carmine, con una gestualità drammatica ed eloquente. L’energia e l’emozione sprigionate da questo santo sono esaltate dall’uso della luce che vibra nel suo sguardo intenso e lambisce le sue mani. Il piccolo brano narrativo sulla sinistra, con l’angelo in volo che salva una donna dalla città in fiamme, rappresenta la liberazione delle anime dal Purgatorio. San Francesco e l’altro frate furono realizzati da un collaboratore del Guercino.
