La tela celebra la figura di San Giovanni Battista quale precursore di Cristo, del quale annuncia l’avvento, come si evince dal gesto del braccio e dalla presenza della croce di bambù. Il manto rosso che copre il santo e che si allarga per adagiarsi sulla roccia, donando alla figura monumentalità e centralità, preannuncia il martirio. Di grande effetto emotivo sono il suggestivo paesaggio aperto su un cielo mattutino e la luce che lambisce delicatamente il corpo idealizzato del santo. In origine il dipinto era collocato nella chiesa del SS. Rosario di Cento.

The red cloak covering the saint and spreading out to drape over the rock, gives the figure monumentality and centrality, foreshadowing his martyrdom. The evocative landscape stretching under a morning sky, and the light gently touching the saint’s idealised body have a deep emotional effect. Originally the painting was located in the church of SS Rosario in Cento.
