Firmata nell’ombra proiettata dal profilo del gradino in basso (IO. FRANC. BARBERIUS. CENTENSIS. FECIT), questa tela fu realizzata dal Guercino nel 1618 per la chiesa di San Pietro a Cento. Due paffuti angioletti sollevano un elegante drappo rosso, a svelare la statua della Madonna di Loreto, davanti alla quale è genuflesso in preghiera San Bernardino da Siena. Accanto a lui San Francesco d’Assisi ammira con devozione l’immagine sacra. Proprio lo spostamento del tendaggio crea un suggestivo gioco di luci  e ombre che investe l’intera scena connotata dal naturalismo dei volti, delle pose, dei paramenti sacri e del cielo rannuvolato.

Signed in the shadow made by the edge of the step on the bottom (IO. FRANC. BARBERIUS. CENTENSIS. FECIT), this painting was made by Guercino in 1618 for the church of San Pietro in Cento. Two chubby cherubs lift an elegant red drape, revealing the statue of Our Lady of Loreto, before whom kneels Saint Bernardine of Siena in prayer. Next to him, Saint Francis of Assisi devoutly admires this sacred image. It is precisely the shifting of the drapery to one side that creates an evocative pattern of light and shadow that washes over the whole scene, characterised by the naturalism of the faces, poses, sacred vestments and cloudy sky.
